NYS Assembly Holds Hearing on Telecommuncations
Jan 21, 2016

(See more pics in photo gallery) CWA Telecom Locals from across NYS attended the NYS Assembly Hearing on Telecommunications.  On the hot seat was the Public Service Commission and Verizon (as well as various other providers).  NYS Assembly member Brennan chaired the meeting and many members of the Assembly came in throughout  the day demanding answers to a range of questions from declining service of the copper network, failure to provide FiOS service in vast area of NYS, slow service response time and inability to get to a human on the line when calling for service (Assemblymen Buchwald & Otis were on hand).  CWA Telecom expert Debbie Goldman presented testimony on the Union’s behalf regarding the burdening of landline service with an un-proportional amount of debt, under employment of needed workers to service telecom plant, and movement of call center work overseas.  A slide show of plant in poor condition was narrated by an 1118 outside plant retiree.   Goldman testified that the solution to poor customer service is two-fold:  A needed return to real regulation that includes fines for not providing excellent service and a demand by the PSC and or legislative body to build-out FiOS across NYS
