Happy Veteran's Day: Never Stop Leading
Nov 11, 2015

With our respect, gratitude and admiration CWA Local 1103 wishes all our Veterans a well deserved day of recognition.  Happy Veterans Day for what you did in the service of our country and your continued leadership in our communities and Unions.

The fact is those that have served our country in the military are an elite few.   There are 21.8 million Veterans according to the 2014 Census Bureau and to put that in perspective there are 319.2 million Americans.  Currently only about 7% of all Americans have worn the uniform of the military service.  In the words of Winston Churchill,  “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”.

Yet, gratitude can never be enough.  Unless the scarifies of the peace and wartime Veteran are recognized with real action the yellow ribbons we display and well wishes we give will never be enough to close the gap on a debt owe.  Never has this be truer than in NY State.   Over the last two years Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D) has been fighting for legislation she author called “The Veteran’s Equality Act” which would grant all Veterans pension equity that work in public service.  The NYS Senate has a "same as" bill sponsored by Senator Larkin (R).   If the Veteran’s Equality Act was passed all Veterans would be granted service credit for time served in the military.  Currently the rules in NY only affect Veterans that have served in armed conflict.  These rules unfairly affect women who have worn the uniform as well  Veterans that have served during the Cold War.

This year the bill was passed in both the NYS Assembly and Senate; yet, was vetoed by Gov Cuomo.  The bill is not an unusual request it actually would put NY in line with many other states that honor their Veteran’s service equality.  Yet, the fact remains Cuomo refuses to sign the bill.  So, yet another year goes by with well wishes; but, no action in NYS.  In the case of the Veteran Equity bill, never in the interest of fairness and gratitude, was so much owed, a bi-partisan majority wanting to give, and a single person willing to deny.
